The word hypothesis is often used to describe a proposed explanation of a phenomenon, or the provisional thoughts about it. A theory is a well-substantiated explanation of some aspect of the natural world that can incorporate facts, data and tested hypotheses. Classify each description as a hypothesis, theory, or law.

Hypothesis-Something that is suggested or put forward for consideration but is not yet proven. (Example: The sun orbits around the earth)

Theory- A well-substantiated explanation of some aspect of the natural world that can incorporate facts, data, and tested hypotheses. (Example: the earth revolves around the sun.)

Law-A description of a phenomenon that holds true under given circumstances regardless of who conducts an experiment. A law provides insight about how a phenomenon occurs.

Learn The Truth About Description Of Hypothesis, Theory, Or Law :

1. Hypothesis

This is a proposed explanation of a phenomenon. It can be based on reasoning and logic that are generally used to create theories and laws. This hypothesis is not yet proved. It is a theory more than a hypothesis. Nevertheless, it still holds some ground for being a theory because it is used to find different answers to puzzles. This hypothesis is used to find the answers to how a phenomenon happens. It is widely used after it has been proven that the phenomena does not exist.

2. Theory

A theory is a well-substantiated explanation of some aspect of the natural world that can incorporate facts, data, and tested hypotheses. It is believed as true until it has to be proven otherwise. This theory includes the facts and data that have been tested for its validity. Facts can be those things that are observed or happen in the world, while data are those things that are not directly observed but are derived from observable facts by inference.

A famous example of a theory is Isaac Newton’s second law which says an object’s acceleration (a) is inversely proportional to its mass (m) and directly proportional to the applied force (F). Another example is that of gravity which explains the attraction of two objects by the force of one object to another. A well-substantiated explanation of some aspect of the natural world that can incorporate facts, data, and tested hypotheses. (Example: the earth revolves around the sun.

3. Law

A law is a description that provides insight about how a phenomenon occurs. These laws explain all types of phenomena including, causes and effects, directions or movement and velocity or speed. For instance, most people know that if they drop an egg off of a cliff it will roll down but will stop at some point. It stops because there is something stopping it from rolling further such as a rock in its way.

Another law states that if you take a significant force in any direction, the object will not be able to move in any other direction regardless of the size or shape of that object. The laws of physics are all examples of laws. A description of a phenomenon that holds true under given circumstances regardless of who conducts an experiment. A law provides insight about how a phenomenon occurs.

Learning how to identify a hypothesis, theory, or law is particularly useful because you can use them in essays and presentations. A theorist or a researcher can also use these words to propose different hypotheses or theories. If you want to become a researcher, it is also important that you are able to classify different concepts using these words so that your proposal will be considered sound and validated.

You may also check on the difference article between hypothesis vs theory vs law for more information about the differences among these terms.
