1) Know Your Target Market: 

This might sound elementary but finding out who you’re trying to reach is the first step in marketing yourself successfully. Identify your target market and then determine whether they are interested in the product or service you offer. It is important to understand the motivations of your customers, what they like and dislike, and how to make your product or service even better. In order to reach a targeted market you need to conduct research by either asking customers what they want or using a tool such as call tracking software.

2) Location of your customer base:

Another thing to do when selecting a target market is to determine the location of your potential customer base. For example, if you’re selling organic produce in the UK you might want to consider targeting people that live in areas with a large population of organic produce farmers. If you’re selling sportswear to people in a country where the temperature rarely gets below freezing then you might want to think about a marketing strategy that includes showing pictures of people wearing your products.

3) Know the competition:

While this may seem like the obvious step, know your main competition inside and out! If there are any other companies offering similar products or services to yours, then take full advantage of them by learning as much as possible. Find out what they do right and how they could improve their services. It is important to be aware of competitors because it gives you an idea of what customers are looking for, or even just new ideas on how you could tweak your business model.

4) Where does your business fit in?

It can be easy to get lost in the smorgasbord of marketing strategies but knowing where your business fits in will keep you focused and on track. In order to identify an effective market strategy, think of how you want people to perceive your business. Do you want customers to think of your company as a “green company”, a “budget option” or a “luxury brand”? Once you’ve determined how you want your business to be perceived, it’s easier to narrow down the type of marketing strategy that will work best for it.

5) Have a Brand:

It’s important to stand out from the crowd. Customers want to know what your business is about and what makes it unique. Once you’ve established how you want people to perceive your company it’s time to create a brand that will be recognizable by potential customers. This brand represents the values you have for your company and will help new customers identify with the company. The more easily identifiable your brand is, the easier it is for customers to find you.

Is there anything different about your product or service? A focus on a product or service that has an aura of ‘prestige’ may resonate well with a target customer base. However, one must take into consideration the practicality of such a product. This is where research comes into play again as you need to do some research to find out what sells best in your area and what is most practical to offer. Ask yourself “what can I do that no other company is doing?”

7) Difference between product and service:

After doing some market research you may find that there are certain things about your product or service that define your business. Is there anything unique about how you produce it? Are parts of the process done in a different way? Is it sold at a lower cost than similar products? One aspect of marketing is showing off what makes you better than other companies with similar services or products.

8) Communication:

If you have any sort of social media then make sure you’re using it to your advantage! It’s a great place to provide information about your company and reach out to potential customers. If you don’t already have a blog or website, then make sure that you get one as soon as possible. More and more businesses are seeing the benefit of having their own web page. Make sure that any information that your prospective customers need is easily accessible (good phone number, address, email address in/on the website) and visible on your page.

9) Target key groups:

Just because you want to target certain groups doesn’t mean that other groups are completely off limits. For example, you may want to consider targeting women who are pregnant or older people as they might prefer products that have a certain quality. Also think about groups of people with particular tastes.

10) Target who your customers are:

This one is not always as obvious but can make all the difference when it comes to the success of your marketing campaign. When thinking of who you want to target, consider their hobbies and interests. Do they like sports? Do they like music? Are they social butterflies? The more specific you can be about what their interests are, the easier it will be for you to reach them with your marketing campaign.


These are just ten ideas but remember to apply them in a way that works best for you. The number of people in your target market can vary a lot and you cannot be sure that this will be the case until you’ve done some research. Market research is important because as a business owner there is always something that you need to know about your company’s performance.
