When it comes to moving, there are a lot of rules. But those rules can be difficult to remember and hard to follow, particularly when you’re moving with FEDEX virtual assistant. Here are seven rules that could be broken, should you choose to break them—or just make some changes along the lines of how we like things done around here.

1) The driver’s voice is the final decision

It should be. You’re not on the truck. You’re not loading the truck. You’re not driving the truck. It makes sense for the person who is actually doing the moving to make final decisions about how your things are loaded and unloaded. If they say “sorry” at any point during the process and it’s not something that’s easily fixed by you or your team of movers, then there will be no refund for a service not provided. If they told you they would be there at a certain time, it’s pretty likely that they will be there at that time. If not, then you’re probably entitled to some sort of refund since their main focus is on deadlines. It doesn’t matter if your valuable items are being driven across the country on a truck or being shipped by plane.

2) Remember to get signatures

This is a very easy step to forget and it’s because it’s been done for you so many times in the past. We live in an electronic world now, so when we need to get signatures from people electronically, we don’t really think about getting them physically anymore. But this is a rule you should always follow. You need signatures from the driver and the person in charge of the pickup when they are done. It’s a sign that they were there and got your things, along with acknowledging that you will be paying for their services.

3) Consider the insurance figures

If you’re moving something valuable, like a piano or TV, then it’s smart to consider the insurance benefits before you move it. This is especially so if it’s being transported via truck. If the value of your shipment is very high, it’s a good idea to make sure you are getting an additional or upgraded service. The last thing that you want is for your very valuable items to be lost or damaged in shipping and not covered by insurance. It only takes a couple of minutes to research the price of shipping insurance and make sure that your final figure is average or below depending on your package.

4) Set up a pick up time

This is something that requires some advance planning, but you should be able to set up a meeting for when the driver will be arriving at your house. It’s best to have this set up well in advance of when you need it because you don’t want them showing up and having to wait around on the front porch for hours. It’s especially important if you have kids or another person who will be responsible for picking them up and making sure they are there as arranged.

5) Don’t call hours before it’s needed

This is a rule that you should follow because you never know what you will be asked to do at the last minute. If you’re moving and your destination is far away, there’s some chance that your driver may need to stop and buy other things, like packing supplies or a new truck. In those moments, they need to feel secure that they will not be punished with being late at the last minute. So if your movers aren’t on time, don’t call them and complain. They likely had a reason for it.

6) Don’t show up at the last minute

This is an extension of that last rule. Your movers are trying to get through a difficult process and if someone shows up late, it makes matters more difficult. It’s not fun for them, it’s not fun for you, and it’s not worth either of your time. So when you are given a specific time, be there on time or early.

7) Read the FEDEX contract

Again, this is something that we don’t do very often in this day and age and we often think we have read things when in fact we just skimmed the page without reading what was actually written there. It’s often very difficult to keep your eye focused on the key things you need to know and what is important to understand. So if you are doing this, be sure that you do all of your reading and any research so that when a decision needs to be made, you will actually have some facts on hand.
